Storm Damage

Did you know?: MHIA cover damage caused by storm, including cyclones.

What is covered?

MHIA Insurance provides coverage for the following storm-related damages:

  • Loss or damage caused by hail.
  • Loss or damage caused by the entry of rain, hail, or snow into your building if the entry point was created by the same storm.
  • Loss or damage caused by rainwater run-off on the home site or entering the building.
  • Loss or damage due to power surge caused by lightning.

What is not covered?

MHIA Insurance does not provide coverage for the following storm-related damages:

  • Loss or damage caused by flood.
  • Loss or damage caused by storm surge, tidal wave, or tsunami (even if caused by an earthquake).
  • Loss or damage to paint and/or external coatings of a building if it does not affect the structural integrity of the building.
  • Loss or damage caused by rainwater run-off when a flood also occurs, and the flood level exceeds the rainwater run-off within the same 48-hour period.
  • Loss or damage to a home building or carport caused by hail if it does not:
    • Reduce the water-shedding capabilities or expected service lifespan of the roof, home building, or carport.
    • Affect the appearance or aesthetic of the carport, garage door, awnings, pergolas, sheds, fly screens, or shutters as seen by an ordinary observer at the home site.
  • Minor indentations from hail to the main roof that do not impact the water-shedding capabilities or expected serviceable lifespan of the roof are not considered damage and are therefore excluded from coverage.

Impact Damage

What is covered?

Worried about something falling and impacting your home? Here is what is and isn’t included within the MHIA PDS.

MHIA Insurance covers loss or damage caused by:

  • Aircraft or objects falling from an aircraft, including space debris.
  • Road vehicles or watercrafts.
  • Falling trees or branches.

What is not covered?

  • Loss or damage caused by lopping or felling trees or branches by you or with your consent.
  • Removal of tree stumps still in the ground.
  • Removal or any costs associated with fallen trees or branches that have not caused damage to your home or contents.

What Does That Mean For Me?

Example of a Storm Claim

Scenario: A cyclone causes extreme winds, which causes a branch to fall on the roof and break a skylight, this allows rain to enter your roof and damage your ceiling.

Ceiling sheeting replacement, plastering, and painting: $10,000

Skylight replacement: $1,000

Basic excess: $750

Claim payment: $11,000 - $750 = $10,250

Example of a Hail Claim

Scenario: A hailstorm causes minor indentations on the main roof but does not affect its water-shedding capabilities or serviceable lifespan. However, the carport’s Perspex sheeting is punctured, affecting its water-shedding capabilities and appearance.

Carport roof replacement: $10,000

Main roof replacement: $30,000

Hail excess: $2,000

Claim payment: $10,000 - $2,000 = $8,000 (No cover for the main roof as the indentations do not impact its functionality.)
